| SummerBabe's Full Review: Winbook Si2 700/128 |
OK, a close friend of mine just bought this little number, and ofcourse I stole it for a while. Man am I jealous. this is such a WONDERFUL notebook I can hardly stand it. Winbook is trying to become the forerunner for laptops where you get tons of stuff priced a lot less than the competition. Dell is a great company, but they are dedicated to putting the "P" in pricey.
Where shall I begin? OK, I basically got on the system, and looked about. HUGE 12 GIG Hard Drive! For a lap top, that's amazing. Ram, Nice 128 which is perfect for the web (and upgradeable to 256). Windows 98, second edition, saucy. Nothing's going to slow you down. And the best part, a Pentium III 700 MHz system, Hold me.... I'm Happy.
This system can do anything. I decided to see how it would handle active combat for the average Internet user, and I signed on to EarthLink, TCP/IPed to AOL, signed in IRC (Internet relay chat, nifty little program), started playing mp3s (which does consume quite a bit of power) and then actively started searching the web for apartments. I used the computer over 2 hours without ever being slowed down, and the battery never died. This computer is phenomenal, but still I pressed on.
I killed the mp3 player (note: laptops have *really* bad speakers, the one thing they haven't fixed. i used mini speakers attached to the side, which sound alot better), and stuck in wheel of fortune (I know, lame but I love it) and played that while downloading on both AOL and Netscape. Not a chug. Not a pause, just flawless. I then opened PowerPoint and designed a quick but intense presentation for it to run (as I was already trying to weasel the computer away from my friend for class). I also installed kawa/java software, and started compiling things, it all flowed beautifully. Two days later, we sat up watching "Stealing Beauty" on this computer because, Oh Yes, there is a 6x DVD player, baybee! The display was so sweet, due to the huge 14.1 ACTIVE MATRIX SCREEN.
This is an amazing system, and my friend purchased it fora mere 2750 + tax (which is high here in NY). Winbook is selling it for a couple hundred dollars more, which is fine, he just got a good sale (remember all those Toshiba Tecras that flooded the market at a whopping 7000 dollars???). What's interesting to note is that Dell has a similar system, the inspiron which has the same make up (save for the DVD player, which is 8x speed, as opposed to the Winbook's 6x) for almost a thousand dollars more. Also, you have to customize their (dell) notebook on the web, and it initially only comes with 96 megs of ram. Boo!
So, to quote Ferris Bueller... "If you have the means, I'd highly recommend you pick one up.... It's so choice." Winbook is seriously making a name for itself.
Hope that helped!
