Microsoft Notepad is a program that comes as standard on Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT and i'm not sure for other Windows Applications (maybe someone could leave a comment saying whether or not it does and I will add it).
Notepad can be found easily on Windows by clicking on the Start button then going to Programs, then to Accessories and then you simply scroll down until you see Notepad and you obviously click on this.
Notepad's noteable advantage over Microsoft Word or Microsoft Frontpage is that it opens very quickly and doesn't use up much RAM. And, as I said in a previous epinion on Mircosoft Word Pad, this is an important factor for me when you have a speed of 166mhz and a 16 mb memory.
One of the reasons Notepad was created by Microsoft was to let someone due up a short note. But on Notepad it is very hard to change the font, font color, font size etc. And the default font when printed is small, near impossible to see and in a very ugly font type. So if you were leaving a note the person you left the note for may not be even able to see it as it would be impossible to see. If you are leaving a short note I recommend Microsoft Word Pad.
The main reason Notepad was designed in my opinion is for HTML design. It is probaly the hardest way to learn HTML and Microsoft Frontpage is much easier. I learn't HTML on Notepad and my webpages where always very poor graphic wise until I discovered Microsoft Frontpage. Don't get me wrong it is handy as you know what is going on when using Frontpage. But if you want to know HTML don't learn with Notepad use Frontpage and read a HTML book.
The categories in Notepad are:
File: The basics New, Open, Save, Save as, Print, Page Setup (note it doesn't even give you the option of Print Preview) and Exit.
Edit: Undo, Cut, Copy, Paste, Delete. There is a Select All option which highlights the entire document. This bit I like espically if you are designing a web page you click this button Time/Date and it inserts the current time and date. So if you were putting in the last updated time you could just click this or as shortcut F5. Also another handy option is Word Wrap this means that the document automatically goes down a line when it comes to the end of a line. Otherwise your HTML etc. can get very messy.
Search: This has Find and Find Next (Shortcut F3) this basically finds a word or phrase it the document.
Help: This has an indexed troubleshooting guide which contains all possible things that could go wrong while using Microsoft Notepad.
Overall I don't recommend this program for notes the fonts are all wrong and it is the hardest was by far to learn HTML. But it doesn't use up to much RAM and the learning curve is about 10 minutes at the most so it doesn't take a rocket scientist to run this program.
