| BuzzTheta's Full Review: Turtle Beach Montego II Home Studio |
For those interested in electronica and making your own music, the Montego II Home Studio provides a great basic package with lots of flexibility.
So far, I have not run any professional software packages, such as Stienberg's offerings, but all music software from Magix, Sonic Foundry, and Voyetra rund very well. (Note: Voyetra owns Turtle Beach and the Montego line of sound cards.)
The digital I/Os are great if you use some sort of offboard recording device such as DAT or MiniDisc. The Cancun daughtercard allows you to use downloadable (DLS) instrument sets and control them with a midi keyboard, giving you virtually unlimited sounds. (CuBase VST is an excellent program for this, but will need a more expensive card for the 24 bit version.)
The previous reviewer was unable to get the board to work under Win2k, which is unfortunate. My system is using Win98SE, and all features are accessible.
I do not know how this card functions in slower systems, as I am running a P-III 600 with 256MB ram. I do know that the card is an IRQ hog. If you run a lot of peripherals that need reserved IRQs (GeForce graphics + network card + modem + video capture, etc, etc) then the IRQ situation could become a problem. I had to do a lot of bios tweaking to get it set up right. On the other hand, people who really need this card probably have the expertise to do it.
