| dragonmoney's Full Review: Debian GNU |
Debian is getting better and better. They are adding more packages to their operating system and making it better. Debian is very different from some of those other, more popular Linux distributions, such as Red Hat and Mandrake. Debian is definitely not for beginners.
The installation requires a good solid knowledge of what you want and where you want it. There is no graphical installation and for someone expecting a quick and easy installation process it can be a huge headache. My first Linux distribution was Debian and as a beginner I had a very difficult time with it. I just finished installing it a second time on a different computer for a friend and it was much much easier. So for beginners practice on something easier first.
If you have some more experience with Linux then debian just might be your cup of tea. It gives you more control over your installation and services running on your computer than any of the other distributions. The operating system comes with GNOME for X Windows and a few other less popular GUIs.
The price, if you buy it in stores instead of downloading it off of the internet, is very reasonable. And it comes with the book "Learning Debian GNU/Linux". Which is a very helpful and informative book. Which covers everything you need to know from the installation to setting up X Windows to configuring your web server.
