How select a satisfied laptop

Oct 20 '00

With the technology development laptop becomes more and more popular. How selecting a satisfied laptop is a question for everyone who want to buy a new laptop. I have buyed several laptops. The following is my advice.

1. Who should buy a laptop
Most notebook users are people who need to take their work with them - traveling business people, consultants, and students are common laptop users. They need have full access to email, files and software applications on the go. Another type of user is the one who does not want a PC that takes up a lot of space.

2. Main character
All-in-one is the main character. Laptops computer have a keyboard, mouse, and monitor in an all-in-one system that is comparably lightweight, easy to set up and easy to carry. Comparing with the PC the laptop is very light. The weight is usually between 4 an 10 pounds and are thin enough to fit in a briefcase. This depends on the make and model of the system. The thinner the laptop the more external hardware you will have to plug in.

3. Screen
The screen size is an important factor when choosing a laptop. If you will be using a laptop to read documents or look at a lot of graphics, you may want consider a bigger screen. Of course the bigger screen will increase the machine's weight but it will have a higher resolution than a smaller screen. The higher the resolution, the more clear , colorful, and crisp the picture is. Generally a smaller screen can be 10 and 12 inches, while a larger screen can be between 13 and 15 screen.

4. External Drivers
Floppy disk drives and CD-ROM drives are the most common external hardware plug-ins to make notebooks thin and lightweight. Each time you want to use an external CD-ROM drive you have to shut down your system, insert the PC card connected to your CD-ROM drive into the appropriate slot on the laptop and then turn your computer back on. So thin notebooks with external hardware are ideal for people who won't need them.

5. Keyboards and mouse
The keyboard depends on the size of the unit. But most of them take up half of the inside surface of the open system , opposite the screen. The laptop have regular size keyboards, while smaller notebooks can have compact keyboards. But you can plug-in a standard computer keyboard through one of the laptop peripheral ports. The mouse on a keyboard is usually either a pointing stick or "pointer", a touch point or both. To move the mouse around the screen you need to apply pressure in the direction you want the cursor to move. Similarly to board you can choose to plug-in a peripheral mouse if you are more comfortable with the traditional roller-ball creature. Since laptop users on the go will do most of their interaction with the computer on the internal keyboard and mouse , it is good idea to test both at a computer retailer before you purchase a notebook to make sure you are comfortable with them.

6. Dock
A docking station is a device you can use to connect to peripherals like a full size keyboard, a mouse , external speakers or a network easily. People who travel frequently often use docking stations when they are back working at home or in their office to add some of the convenience and features of a desktop. For example if you want to use an external keyboard monitor and printer you would plug each into a port on the back of the docking station. Then you only have to plug the laptop into the docking station not each device into the laptop. This saves the hassle of having to plug each peripheral into your laptop separately every time.

7. Perform
The perform is same as the common PC. This depends on the processor, RAM and hard drive size.

8. The price
The price is higher than the common PC. Generally the lowest cost notebook computers cost about the same amount as midrange desktop computers. A realistic price for a laptop is between $1800 to $3000. It can start as low as $1200 but lower cost models are generally compromised by lower quality screens.

Hope you can have a good laptop.
