| jmdyson's Full Review: Dell Inspiron 7000 A400LT |
I've had my Inspiron 7000 for almost a year now and I'm extremely pleased with it. The main reason I bought it was the screen size...15.1 is awesome! I was going to buy a docking station, but didn't bother once I'd seen/used the screen. I _still_ get envious looks at the screen when using it on planes!
Another epinions review complained about the screen overhang around the main case...yes, it _could_ get snagged on something if you're not careful, but the way it is, it exactly fits in the regular Targus carry case. The sleep mode is indeed a problem....basically it dies on you. I get system messages that ask me if I want it to go into sleep mode the next time as it reported problems....despite answering no it still does. I'd bet there's a fix at Dell's web site, but it's happened so rarely that I haven't sorted this out yet.
Despite coming with a DVD drive I hadn't actually viewed a DVD on it until 2 weeks ago. I wondered if it would work seeing as how I have reformatted my drive a couple of times [just routine system 'cleaning' that I do...nothing to do with the Inspiron] and I wasn't sure if I had got all the DVD support done correctly. I was amazed at how crisp and clear the movie was on the screen....awesome. I was going to hook the laptop up to my TV, but I ended up watching it all on the laptop!
I bought an extra battery [that can be used simultaneously with the other battery if need be, at the expense of the 3.5"/DVD drive]. I haven't found much use for this as a single battery lasts me roughly 3 hours depending on what I am doing.
Yes, it is a boat anchor. I wouldn't recommend this machine for carting around airports regularly, but it is portable desktop performance, unlike a lot of watered down laptops...
All in all an excellent buy. Having a year old laptop that has a 15" screen, 192MB of RAM, an 8GB hard drive, 8MB video card and a DVD ROM drive is not exactly slumming it :)
I'd buy one again....let's hope it's not the end of January when my warranty expires!
