| hhong's Full Review: HP Pavilion N3110 |
Well I've had this laptop for a couple months now, so I thought I'd write up my follow up. I still like this computer very much. I think I got an excellent deal. The machine has functioned flawlessly up until last week when I tried to install the latest version of Internet Explorer. It wouldn't run for some reason, but I blame that totally on Microsoft and not the HP Pavilion. I went back to using the previous version of IE5 and it works fine.
When I first got it I worried that the passive display would not be good enough, but it turned out since I only use it in indoor environments, it hasn't been a problem at all. Even next to a window on a bright, sunny day, the display has been very readable.
I did however determine one very large flaw with this unit. The battery life on a full charge seems to be no more than 90 minutes. Since I use this machine in stationary positions, it hasn't been a problem for me. But, if you're someone who likes to work on the road, you'll fine the battery life totally unacceptable. The only fix for this would be to upgrade the battery from the NiMh that comes with it to a Lithium Ion battery. The Lithium Ion costs about $150. Seems expensive to me and I don't think it would give you more than 180 minutes of life at best. But then you'd still have the NiMh to switch to giving you an optimistic total combined time of 270 minutes. I've heard that some notebooks will give you up to 5 hrs of battery life now. But then again, those cost a lot more than what I paid for the HP. So in the end, I still very pleased with the value of my purchase. If I ever find I have to use it more on the road, I'm sure I'll find the battery issue frustrating, but I by that time I will invest in the new battery and/or a lighter plug adapter.
