| sirsolo's Full Review: Samsung SyncMaster 900 NF |
My 3 year old Sony Trinitron monitor (20") broke down a few months ago, so I had to replace it. Since I was on a tighter budget, I focused my research on 19 inch monitors, but I wanted to get a flat CRT monitor for a change (my old one was a regular "fisheye" monitor).
After reading reviews and opinions by others, I narrowed down my choice to three monitors: ViewSonic PF790, KDS AV-195, and this monitor Samsung 900NF.
However, knowing that with something like a monitor it is best to be able to look at the display before ordering (I bought mine through the internet), I went down to a local Best Buy. Well, they did not have 900NF in display, but they did have PF790. I checked it out but the images were fuzzy, and colors weren't very bright. That was enough to remove PF790 from my list. Wanting to check out the other monitors, I went to a local Circuit City and CompUSA, but none of them had the KDS or Samsung monitors in stock. It was time to go back to web reviews.
The reviewers seem to like both of these monitors very much. KDS was a bit cheaper, but Samsung offered higher resolution at higher refresh rates. Then I have heard from some people that KDS tended to run a bit hot (some reported strong ozone smell), so I decided to go with the Samsung. It had higher resolution at higher refresh rates anyway, so that was good.
After using this monitor for a while, all I can say is WOW. The quality of this monitor is exceptional. It surpasses my old Sony monitor by a mile! Of course, the flat CRT helps, but the quality of text and graphics is much better than the Sony. It is bright and the colors are good.
Some people seem to have complained that they got a defective monitor after buying theirs because the corners had different tone and some focus problems. Well, it is not because they have a defective monitor, but because the default setting may be off. Mine had the same issue, but what's so good about this monitor is that there are controls to adjust pretty much any setting you want for this monitor!
There are controls (on display digital) to control all the standard stuff, but there are controls to control corner distortion, linearity, purity, focus, and convergence among others. You would think that with so many things to control, it would be hard to use, but that's not the case either, the seven buttons (which can be hidden from view), four of which act as directional arrows, are easy and simple to use.
This monitor also offers BNC connector unlike KDS.
Overall, I would say that this is a pretty good monitor for the price! Why *waste* money buying a Sony, when this monitor offers so much for much less money.
