CHECK IT OUT CAREFULLY

Mar 17 '00

After two failed computer purchases locally, I decided, after much looking and calling around, to purchase a new computer from CyberMax. It was ordered in mid-October and delivered as promised in early November. I ordered an Enthusiast Series with an AMD K-6 600 processor, paid for upgrades to a Voodoo 3000 dfx video card, a single stick 128 meg memory (which was advertised in the ad which was in a current month's magazine as being standard)--they were short on memory at that time and said they'd revamped the ad. I agreed to pay an extra $100 to get the single stick 128 meg(as opposed to the now standard 64 meg), a 28G 7200rpm harddrive, and an upgraded sound card, I also deleted the software--I'd just bought and installed Windows 98, and had other software with which I was satisfied, and asked not to be shipped peripherals--i.e. a monitor, mouse, or keyboard, etc.
When the computer arrived, the first things out of the box were a ton of unneeded software, a below standard keyboard, a microphone, a cheap mouse, and other gadgets I did not want or need. Upon this discovery, we decided to open the computer itself and make sure that we had the upgrades requested. They had downgraded the sound card, the video card, and the harddrive was a 17G-7200 rpm instead of the 28G I had ordered.
An immediate phone call to customer service was met with hostility. "The invoice says--and that's what you got"--when we knew differently. I immediately fired off a certified mail letter to CyberMax and my credit card company and began call CyberMax on a daily basis. It took 3-1/2 months to get a Return Merchandise Authorization to return the computer--and that was because my credit card company forced CyberMax to do it. I wound up having to return it at my expense. The topper to the situation is that I, only yesterday, received a reply to my second certified letter, which they received November 27th (today is March 17th). Even though I have a certified mail receipt for the first letter--they deny receiving the letter and have tried to claim I hadn't notified them in the first 30 days (when in fact they had received 2, one on November 14th and the second on November 27th) that the computer was not what I had ordered.
They may build good computers--but a word to the wise--make sure you got what you paid for. It's taken 4-1/2 months and three inches of paperwork and untold hours to resolve this problem.
