Microsoft's free web-based email service, Hotmail, looks good, and is easy to use, but I have seen such an amount of ridiculous amount of spam recently that I have completely given up with their service.
It works like any other usual free email service. Create a user name, pick a password, and you are on your way. It's not terribly difficult to set up, and get off and running. The interface is easy to navigate, with well sorted folders, with addresses, trash, and bulk mail. You can also utilize the POP option, for up to four different addresses. You can even use an option to change the language as well. Also, you can subscribe to Hotmail exclusive newsletters (which are pretty worthless in my opinion).
Yet there are problems abound. First flaw I have seen really irritated me. I tried sending something to all the people in my address book. As I picked each name, the forwarded message went blank! So instead of clicking and forwarding, I had to manually insert the names of the recipients. To say it was a pain in the butt is an understatement. When you want to send something to like 50 people, it isn't fun.
Also, I found something very interesting regarding spam. I set up my first Hotmail account about a year ago. Earlier this year, I set up another for professional reasons (after all, stonecold2181 isn't a "professional-type" email address). Well, my old account gets zero spam, and my new one gets about ten spam-mails every day! From get rich quick to start your own business at home, to "explore your wildest fantasies with steamy phone sex" type porn, to "get a mortgage now" (obviously run by the phone sex people). I forgot about this account for a month or so, checked it, and got over 300 messages! How my old account gets no spam and all I get on my other one is spam I have no idea.
Anything good? Well, a lot of people use it, so if you send a message to another Hotmail address, it is instantaneously sent there. That's right, unlike the process of a delay between email going from one email server to another, it just goes straight to the inbox.
Also, if you have Hotmail, you are automatically given rights to the MSN Messenger Service for instant messaging. It's a bare bones IM, but it's good for chatting with friends. I only keep my Hotmail for that reason only.
If you like spam, get Hotmail today. If not, look elsewhere. As for me, I think I will stick to my att.net address. At least I don't get spam. It may be free, but it isn't worth it.
