"Bodice rippers"?

Well, at least the category name is sure to get people's attention...
But as for the question at hand, is a trashy romance novel that depicts scenes of sexual passion and violent action demeaning to women? Isn't the first half of this question a bit demeaning by asking if women really want sexual passion? Maybe it's my age talking again, but when I look for trashy romance novels to kill time with, I don't want something where the main attraction to the guy is his steady income and his willingness to do the dishes. I want..well, lust. Because there's nothing wrong with sexual passion! And what's wrong with a few clothes being torn off by consenting adults?
Violence meanwhile...I wish the topic was a bit more specific on that. If it is violence against the woman, of course it's demeaning. Especially if it plays into that "good girls don't" junk that seems to imply that even a willing woman should scream and cry no matter what because otherwise she's trash. That is demeaning and disgusting. Especially if the "hero" pins down the heroine and rapes her, causing her to fall madly in love with him.
If, on the other hand, the violence is hero vs. villain to rescue the heroine, what's the real harm? It may not be empowering, but there are some women who want to be "rescued" by a handsome stud. Not all women do, but let those who do indulge themselves.
