Skin Problems! Allergic to almost everything

I have always had sensitive skin. My mother used to tell stories of how long it took to find a soap which would not make me break out, or a laundry soap which was okay. I have always had to be careful. I never really knew why. I always assumed it went with my sensitivity to medications, cleaners, and just about anything with a smell of any kind.
In 1995 my son was diagnosed with the disease porphyria, which includes some sun sensitivities and some serious chemical ones. I finally knew why I reacted to things the way I did. So I set out on a journey to find out what I could do to make myself and my son more comfortable yet able to get reasonably clean.
I heard from a friend about natural soap, so I headed straight to the web to find out how to make it. The first site I went to not only had lots of information about about how to make soap, but links which told me some of the things that were in commercial soap! At first I was scared to even try, but then I did. My family did not know quite what to think about a mother who made soap, but acted interested as I made my first batch. We waited the three weeks for it to cure, and all tried it out. It was fabulous!
Two years later I have perfected our recipe and even sell some to friends and such. I have discovered I don't like using animal fat, but prefer vegetable oils. My kids now call commercial soap "piggy soap" and always take a bar of "mom's" when they travel. We can have soap that smells nice again! I discovered essential oils which are natural smells which do not bother me. My family refuses to use anything other than natural soap, and now most of my friends beg for some too.
If you have extremely sensitive skin I would recommend you go to a health food store and see what they have in natural soaps. Give it a try. Then if you are really brave, hit your local web search engine and become one of the growing population of soapers!
