This company will lie to you at every opportunity.
I asked for them to stop sending me books, unless I explicitly asked for them (regardless of mail-back cards). I was told that this was impossible, so I told them to cancel my account, suddenly it was possible to stop sending me books. So their default action is to lie to you, then tell you a bunch of _since you're such a good customer crap_ if you push the matter.
Event when the tell you they will stop sending books (in an email), they will still send you books.
Then they will charge you, and send your account to a collections agency, while claiming to have sent you _return package labels_ (whatever they are) which you are to use to return the books.
Of course, you have nowhere to turn; you're screwed by them, then they screw you a second time with the whole collection agency/credit score scam.

This company disregards customers after they have you on the hook - meaning your four book commitment. I was online and I saw that there was an offer for 30% off the books that I was thinking about buying. EACH book had the advertisement next to the book. When I went through the final check out part I noticed that the 30% was not taken off my order - there was NO WAY TO GO BACK. I contacted the customer service department right away. They informed me that my books had already been shipped and there was nothing that they could do (mind you their books NEVER ship that fast - within minutes). In my second email to them, I again asked for the reason why I did not receive the 30% off as advertised and their response: "We have checked our records and have found that offer is not valid yet."
The advertisement was on the page and by EACH book that I reviewed. Not all the books, but by each one that I chose to buy. They basically baited me in and then switched the deal - that is illegal!
Doubleday Book Club sucks! This is the second time they place an order in my account without my permission (even though I am very careful and I ALWAYS reply to their "Featured Selections" on time... ). On top of that, whenever I try to contact their customer service, it takes forever for them to get back to me. Since I'm so tired of having to deal with this, I asked them to cancel my membership (I already purchased all the books I was "forced" to purchase), but they do not reply to my e-mails! Currently, I have an "outstanding balance" in my account for more than $55 on books I neither ordered nor received... so, what's the deal with them? Really, if you are considering getting a membership, I strongly recommend you NOT to do it... get your books at Borders or some other place like that... their deals are nearly the same and you skip the hazard of getting orders placed under your name and no customer service at all!
